Social gradients in health and aging are well-documented in human societies, yet, how social factors affect aging, and their biological embedding, remains an association for which causality is yet to be demonstrated. In recent years, animal models of social determinants of aging have become available, offering powerful translational opportunities to infer causation. We will present recent data suggesting that social stressors drive systemic and brain aging at least in part via activation of hallmarks of aging including genomic instability and cellular senescence. We expect this research to yield fundamental new insights that can illuminate modifiable pathways to confer resilience to social stress, and its adverse effect on health.
